Wine 9 - 21st December, Jeff Carrel, Morillon Blanc

Dec 21, 2024
Enjoy you Saturday and savour this wine. Well done to you if you make it to 5pm before opening this rich, smooth, and complex Chardonnay. So, grab a glass because you’ll want to try this one. Winemaking genius Jeff Carrel has found a rare source of botrytised Chardonnay (or Morillon to give it its local name down near Narbonne). 25% of the wine is affected by the noble rot and the result is something more like a rich white Burgundy. This Morillon Blanc is soft and spicey with satisfying flavours of toast and butter mingled with vanilla. It's a great accompaniment to Christmas meals and is enjoyable with a soft blue cheese after the meal! If you're capable of resisting drinking this wine now it’ll age well up to ten years.

The Real Wine Story

We’ve already tried Jeff’s Pinot Noir in our calendar. Now here’s another bit of his genius in a bottle. Morillon is the old local name for Chardonnay and you’d almost take it for a classic Burgundy Puligny-Montrachet with its fat, almost oily mouthfeel and spicey flavour. 25% of the grapes in the blend were affected by The Noble Rot, or ’botrytised’. That’s what gives it a certain unctuousness and is what makes Sauternes and other low-yield wines special. It is rarely found outside certain lucky places like Bordeaux and the Loire Valley.

Keep it for the turkey roast if you have the will power to wait, if not Jeff suggests a veal or chicken based supper.
