Wine 10 - 22nd December, Lucien Lardy, Moulin a Vent

Dec 22, 2024

A top Beaujolais is a fine thing, and we're so pleased to share this one. 100% Gamay grapes producing a vibrant, fruity and complex wine. It's a light and elegant style but it's well-structured so will go with most foods. Lucien himself suggests casseroles, goats' cheese and even dark chocolate desserts. A special wine for a time of year that’s starting to feel increasingly special. If your last-minute shopping is done, use this as your delicious reward.

The Real Wine Story

Same old (happy) story…go to the Paris Wine Fair, speed taste hundreds of wines, choose all your favourites.

This time it was Beaujolais Crus, specifically, but not exclusively, Fleurie. It was Lucien’s daughter’s Fleurie which first caught our eye. Quality clearly fantastic wine making runs in the family! However, for this Advent Case we selected Father Lucien’s Moulin-à-Vent. It’s a bit deeper, richer, more structured and has a more Burgundian feel about it than many other Beaujolais Crus. More cherries and red fruit than parma violets. This wine goes beautifully with a Sunday Roast or a Christmas Dinner. Lucien also suggests red meat, spicey foods, goat’s cheese and even chocolate desserts.

Moulin-à-Vent, which is defined by “structure and elegance”, takes its name from the eponymous windmill which is a historical monument standing at 278 metres above sea-level and surrounded by vineyards. But if you can’t get to Beaujolais this December to see the real thing, then let this wine whisk you away there instead….
