Wine 1: 1st December - Florentino Martinez White Rioja
Welcome to the first wine of Advent and if we don't mind saying it's the perfect way to kick-off Christmas. Consider it a treat to share while putting up the tree.
Tasting notes:
This is a young, un-oaked white Rioja made with handpicked Viura, Malvasía and Soleado Calgreño grapes from micro-producer Florentino Martinez. This is soft and fresh with ripe fruit notes, peach, a hint of honey maybe? Great on its own or with a wide range of foods, so pair it with confidence at any meal during Advent or delicious as a stand and sip.

The Real Wine Story
Another Estate introduced to us by a dear old friend producer in Rioja, the late and much missed Miguel Merino. The estate is in the village of Cordovin in the heart of the Rioja Alta and surrounded by some of the finest vineyards on the route to Santiago.
We were a bit wary of white Riojas; many were heavy, over-oaked, flabby wines but the first sip of this made us converts. The Viura grape really can produce lovely wines when treated correctly and with care.
Merche Martinez shows due care with this young wine. Viura with a dash of Malvasia to round it off (Ah! the art of the master blender!). A soft and creamy palate texture. Fresh, fruity and dry. Perfect on its own or with any not-too-spicy foods.
