Terre d'Aione, Greco di Tufo, Campagna, Italy
This is a complex white wine, soft and creamy but with a good acidity. Fruity, think citrus, as well as minerality. A great wine to enjoy throughout a meal as well as on its own.
Unsurprisingly awarded Best White Wine at Vinitaly Wine Fair 2023. Best served with fish and white meats, maybe some caviar crisps, but honestly, just crack it open whenever you feel like it, just make sure it's fridge cold.
We were a bit concerned that across our range of wines we were well-covered for Italian red but we were a bit light on the Italian whites. So, our annual pilgrimage to the Vinitaly Wine Trade Fair in Verona earlier this year was aimed at putting that right. If in doubt, ask an expert. And the view of our old friends and wine producers, Anselmo and Beatrice Chiarli, was that we should focus on the Campania pavilion. That’s where their favourite whites come from. So many wines to taste. Don’t get distracted by the reds, stick to the whites. Ooh, this aged Soave tastes like bacon bits. We’ve lost Mark again. Gosh it’s hot in this tent. But three varietals kept coming up; Fiano, Falanghina and Greco di Tufo. Hundreds of producers in their individual booths, two days of intensive tasting and, happily, a clear favourite. If we’ve said it before, we’ll say it again, when it comes to finding wine…sometimes you just know. Terre d’Aione’s trio of whites hit all the right notes. Clean, complex, good depth of flavour. Dry, soft yet fresh. Long finish. The decision was made. Only then did we learn that Angelo Carpelito’s Greco di Tufo had been voted Best White Wine Vinitaly 2023…and here it is for you to enjoy. Their vineyards have been going for over 150 years but in 2006 Angelo, and his wine Lia, decided to make the wines themselves instead of selling-off the grapes to the big brands. Good decision guys!
