Martinez Alesanco, "Nada Que Ver" Rioja, Spain
So much to say! "Nada Que Ver" in spanish more-or-less means "nothing like anything else". You will almost certainly not have had a 100% Maturana Tinta varietal before and this is the first one ever made, so enjoy a moment of exclusivity!
Winemaker Pedro says "Extraordinary, rare, excellent, unique, and extravagant."
Tim Atkin says: 94/100; Nada Que Ver is always among the most distinctive expressions of Maturana Tinta in Rioja. Soft, velvety tannins, aromas of bramble and cut grass, elegant new oak and a ripe, bright finish.
I was introduced to Pedro at Bodegas Martínez Alesanco by Miguel Merino’s son, also Miguel. Sadly, it was a visit cut short by time constraints otherwise we may well have long over-stayed our welcome. Sometimes you just know when things are right. Each wine tasted in their impressive new winery was really enjoyed and followed by another equally enjoyed. Each wine with a purpose, a point of difference and a story. The brand-new tasting room has panoramic views over the red soils of the Upper Najerilla towards the Sierra Cantabria which between them largely define the microclimate and wine styles. Maybe the highlight of that first tasting together was the revelation of Maturana Tinta, a re-discovered and re-planted Rioja grape variety.
RABITO DE TERNERA AL VINO TINTO. Rich stew of tender meat with a dense and flavourful sauce. It is a traditional family dish that is quite a delicacy when cooked over low heat and makes the most out of the flavours of this great Maturana Tinta variety. A wine that makes you never get tired of eating and drinking.
