De Meye, Barrel-fermented Chenin Blanc, South Africa
Chenin Blanc, South Africa's adopted white wine varietal, has long been known for producing big quantities of fairly bland wines. However, when treated with love and passion it can reach great heights of quality. Restricted yields to enhance the richness means it can cope with the oaky flavours which result for being fermented in barrels.
The De Meye Estate is a family-owned wine farm situated in Stellenbosch. The Myburgh family has been farming in this area for five generations and we met Philip Myburgh during our first buying trip to South Africa back in 2011 and still have the pre-digital-phone video footage to prove it! We visited and tasted wines at over 35 independent “wine farms” during that two-week period and selected three estates to ship to the UK, De Meye being one of the three. Stellenbosch, the town, forms part of the Paarl/Stellenbosch/Franschhoek triangle of dryland vineyards which is arguably South Africa’s most prestigious winemaking region. Philip is the owner and general manager of De Meye. He spent his childhood on the farm, growing-up between cows and vineyards. After attending college and gaining some overseas experience he decided to join his father, Jan Myburgh, on his quest to build their own winery and cellar on the farm and develop the business. Having worked on De Meye for many years now, Philip holds extensive experience in the wine industry as well as the day-to-day management of the business. The vines growing on the De Meye farm have been carefully selected to suit the unique terroir of the area. The red varietals grown include Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Shiraz while Chardonnay and Chenin Blanc make up our white varietals.
